CAPA National Youth Leadership and Innovation ShowcaseCommunity Services Project Competition Guidelines 2024


Event Title: Servant Leaders


Purpose 

The purpose of the competition is to empower and inspire high school students to serve their communities, fostering a sense of civic responsibility and a passion for positive change. Through innovative and impactful projects, the competition aims to foster collaboration and leadership, amplify student voices, celebrate diversity of ideas, and provide a real-world learning experience.


Theme 

The theme for the 2024 competition is Serve Communities Everywhere. Participants may consider projects such as:

  1. Tutoring Low Income or Disadvantaged Children:

  • Individually or collectively operate a program to tutor/mentor low income or disadvantaged children in their neighborhood.

  • Tracking the progress of their tutees and the project’s impact to the children and its community.

  • Focusing on sustainability and long lasting impact.

  1. School Club Leadership:

  • Competed and selected for the school clubs leadership role.

  • Making a significant change or accomplishment while serving at the club.

  • Team building with other club leaders and school leadership.

  • Diversity of the leadership.

  1. Community clubs/groups focusing on various goals, such as environmental protection, mental health, cross-generational communication, immigrant integration, homeless, rescue animals, H4 clubs, Girl/Boy Scouts:

  • Demonstrate taking initiative to identify the issues and organize to make a difference.

  • Develop partnerships with other similar groups and/or expand the reach to other communities.

  • Build effective volunteer mechanisms and succession plans.

  • Ability to find adult project mentors and coaches and funding for the group. 


Eligibility

1. Participants in grades 9-12 during the 2024-2025 school year will be selected for national showcase

2. Participants can be individuals or teams.


Evaluation 

The evaluation consists of two parts, mainly the oral part.


Part I:

  1. 7-10 minutes oral presentation of the project (PPT slides optional) and 2-5 minutes Q&A from the judge.

  2. Invite judges to evaluate based on the rubric provided in Appendix B.

Part II:

  1. Submit a proposal via Google form (questions listed in Appendix A). 

  2. If necessary, invite judges to evaluate based on the rubric provided in Appendix C.

  3. The goal is to advance as many students as possible to national level while considering:

  • Big flaws/deficiencies.

  • Registration volume.


Event Timeline 

The national showcase will take place on [date]. The local competition should complete between 12 weeks to 4 weeks from the national showcase date.
