ChatGPT transformed me into a liberal arts student

Translated by ChatGPT from a Chinese version

In addition to our “Chinese American History” program, CAPA-BC can also hold some parent-child dialogues, such as discussing identity and screen time. During the dialogue, the host asks relevant questions to parents or children, then asks questions to both parents and children, and finally there is a Q&A session for the audience. This activity sounds simple, but a friend reminded me that designing the questions is the key to this project. Upon reflection, I became hesitant about doing this project.

Suddenly, I remembered that a few days ago, ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) was very helpful to me in document processing. Also, I often read on some Chinese websites that ChatGPT can do many things, including writing novels. With a curious mindset, I typed in "Design questionnaires for a parent-child dialogue about screen time" on ChatGPT. Just as I hit “Enter”, the computer screen displayed more than ten lines of text. While I was still in shock, ChatGPT had already listed five questions for parents, five questions for children, and five questions for both parents and children. Moreover, the quality of these questions is very high, and if I had searched the Internet myself, it would have taken me at least an hour. One cannot help but marvel at how ChatGPT is so magical that it transformed a science student like me into a liberal arts student, truly living up to its name as a "Transformer".

With such good questions, as long as we find a moderator, this Parent Child Dialogue project can be launched immediately. Our philosophy is that we are doing this organization to give children more opportunities for exercise, such as public speaking, quick thinking, improvisation, teamwork, writing, and other abilities, rather than having parents exerting themselves on the side. We can ask the children to host these discussions. At present, we already have candidate moderators. On the evening of April 16th, from 7:00-8:00, we will hold the second CAPA-BC event, a parent-child dialogue about screen time, hosted by Zhou Zhong and his daughter Athena Zhou. In another session we will post questions provided by ChatGPT, everyone can take a look and prepare.

The whole discussion will be in English, parents/children can think about how to answer these questions beforehand, and have an outline for the meeting. But please, do not use ChatGPT, we need to listen to your true voices, not the AI-integrated answers. At the same time, we can write articles based on these Q&A and post them on our Wechat public account. We'll write the first one, and in the future, we'll ask the kids to write (in English), we as parents don't need to train ourselves anymore.

We know that some parents may be more fluent in Chinese, and some children may not want to express their thoughts in front of their own parents. In the process of dialogue, if necessary, we can use the "Breakout Room" in Zoom to separate parents and children. Because this is the first time we have done this kind of activity, we may encounter various problems, which is also a process of accumulating experience and growing together. At the same time, we hope that friends who participate in the discussion will abide by some basic rules: no recording of the meeting, respect for those with different opinions, and each person's speaking time is no more than two minutes, etc.

This Parent Child Dialogue is the fruit of our collective wisdom. Qiao Yan first proposed the idea, and Yue Jin further improved how to carry out this activity. As we have discussed before, the charm of democracy lies in collective wisdom. Similar activities can also be improved with everyone's suggestions. Our CAPA-BC activities started later, but fortunately, we have AI to cheer us on. When will we catch up if we don't ride this wave?! Don’t be afraid of trying any new ideas or thoughts; there are probably more things ChatGPT can help us with than we thought!

This is an exciting era!
